Weatherization Assistance Program - New for 2010

The Akwesasne Housing Authority is partnering with COMLINKS, INC to become a Weather Assistance Provider for the Akwesasne Area.

This Weatherization Assistance program consists of four steps:

  1. Application process

  2. Energy audit of your home

  3. Weatherization of your home

  4. Post-weatherization inspection

Weatherization Assistance Providers services reduce the amount of energy required to heat and cool homes and provide hot water, thus reducing energy consumption, while minimizing the impact of higher fuel costs on low-income families. Weatherization Assistance Providers assist low-income households, with priority given to those with elderly or handicapped members, and to families with young children.

Weatherization Assistance Providers perform an energy audit of the home or apartment to identify specific measures to increase energy efficiency. Based on the results of the energy audit, they may provide some or all of the following services: weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows; cleaning, testing, repairs, or replacement of heating systems; replacement or repair of storm windows; replacement or repair of broken windows and/or outside doors; addition of insulation to walls or ceilings; and, mitigation of health and safety concerns, including indoor air quality improvements, correction of ventilation problems that can lead to mold growth, and identification of lead paint hazards.

Weatherization Services may also include other energy-related improvements such as: water heater repair/replacement, roof repair/replacement, chimney repairs, lighting fixture replacement, venting systems, heating distribution system replacement, refrigerator replacement, installation of GFCI outlets, and electrical service upgrade, where indicated by an energy audit and an inspection of the unit.

The following article is a copy of the Housing Services report in the March SRMT Kawenni:ios Newsletter:

In 2009 the Akwesasne Housing Authority celebrated its 25th year in business providing safe and affordable housing to eligible Mohawk families.

Thanks to funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s overall commitment to provide housing programs, and our HUD-assisted families’ dedication in caring for and maintaining their homes, our generation can enjoy safe and sanitary housing, which otherwise could not have been provided.

We are proud of this accomplishment and will be helping our community by hosting some events to commemorate this milestone during 2009.

The AHA sponsored several community events and fundraisers.

  • Our 25th Year Anniversary Logo contest which ended on March 16, 2009 highlighted so many beautiful pieces of art work, it was difficult to judge.  Click here to see the winning logos.
  • The AHA Birdhouse Contest also featured some creative entries.  This contest will ended in a silent/Chinese auction to be held in St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Lobby in May.  The benefit will be AHA’s community fund targeting needy families.  Congratulations to the winners!  Click here for the winners.
  • A Black Tie Event was held on Thursday July 2, 2009.  This was a formal dinner and dance show featuring several eras of dance as well as an auction, all to raise funds for the St. Regis Mohawk Health Services “Let’s Get Healthy Program’s” Diabetes Center of Excellence.  The AHA Board of Commissioners and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has committed to strategies that could enable this facility’s construction in the very near future.  As you know, diabetes has impacted families and friends all around us.  This center promises to bring the necessary education and assistance to those with or without the disease.

  • Holiday Memorial Tree/Raffle.  The AHA’s final 2009 commemorative event will feature a raffle for a beautiful Christmas place setting and a tree lighting ceremony to memorialize loved ones during the holiday season.

The Akwesasne Housing Authority staff and  Board of Commissioners look forward to working with all housing participants and tribal programs in meeting the housing needs of the community of Akwesasne.
